Yesterday was Vitiligo Day. What kind of religious or cultural holiday is that? It is actually a day of awareness for a disease called vitiligo. Basically vitiligo is a condition where the skin loses its pigmentation. It usually starts with the hands but can spread to any part of the body. The cause is unknown and there is no cure (sounds like sarcoidosis). Less than 1% of people have vitiligo and so it is a fairly rare disease.
Now why would I want to talk about this? Well, along with all the other diseases I collect, I also have vitiligo. At first I thought it was only scar tissue on my hands or strange tan lines but have since have had it confirmed as vitiligo. I have it on my hands and have it starting near my temples. After all the health scares I have had, vitiligo is the least of my worries. Still, I think it is important to share this and encourage you to not get freaked out by people who have strange looking skin. It really is no big deal.
