I really believe in the importance of Christian apologetics. I spend a significant amount of time thinking about and writing on apologetics. It is a good thing for people to be involved in. Having said that, there are some dangers that can be associated with apologetics. These dangers can be overcome and should not be a barrier to studying apologetics. But we must be aware of them.
- Apologetics can become more about the winning of the argument than the helping of the individual.
- Bible reading can become too focused on building apologetics arguments rather than drawing closer to Jesus.
- Apologists can get distracted by attacking fellow (orthodox) Christians who we may disagree with over secondary issues.
- Our faith can become unbalanced on the side of intellectualism.
As I said, these dangers can be avoided. The best way to do so is to be aware and set up healthy habits.
