I have had a number of people ask me why Good Friday is Good. Even explaining that it is the day that we remember that Jesus died on a cross doesn’t immediately make things clear. How can the painful death of an innocent man be good? That is one of the most important questions we can ask.
Here are four things that are good about Good Friday.
- It means that God loves us. Easter finds its origin in God’s love for humanity. John 3:16 reminds us that Jesus was sent because “God so loved the world.” God loved us too much to leave us in our hopeless state.
- Jesus’ death reconciles us to God. There are a number of theories of what happened on the cross and I’m not going to go into them here. But Christians are agreed that whatever happened, the death of Jesus means forgiveness of sin, eternal life and adoption into God’s family.
- God knows our suffering. Since God is omniscient (all-knowing) he knows all the facts about suffering. However, the incarnation (God becoming man in Jesus) means that God knows our suffering by experience.
- The cross is not the end. Christians believe that the story does not end on Good Friday. On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead. His resurrection is the promise that we will share in his life. Life ultimately conquers death.
