Are Microchips the Mark of the Beast?

MicrochipFor decades I have heard people claim that a time is coming when the government will insert microchips in our hands and this will be the mark of the beast.

What is the mark of the beast? It is based on this passage from the Bible.

It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666. (Revelation 13:6-8)

Based on the description of the mark as being used for buying and selling, the connection is made with some type of microchip.

I actually remember when people claimed that UPC codes and debit cards were the mark of the beast. I once talked to a person who claimed that digital photography was the mark of the beast.

I do doubt that microchips are the mark of the beast. First of all, Revelation was written for a first century audience and it would have to make sense to them. Secondly, the number of the beast refers to the practice of turning Hebrew and Greek letters into numbers.

For example, 888 is actually the number of Jesus. Some believe that 666 is from the Hebrew for Nero Caesar (Nero was considered an antichrist-type figure).

The mark of the beast will be something that is an intentional choice to follow the power of evil. It is not something that you will be tricked into. People who receive the mark, will no what they are doing.

What about microchips? As I said, I don’t think they are the mark. But I do have concerns. We should have a problem with giving up the limited privacy we have. I have no desire to have a microchip implanted in me, but not because it might be the mark of the beast.
