About Me

Stephen Bedard

My favourite word is WHY and it sometimes gets me in trouble. Not bad trouble, but I have been known to ask some uncomfortable questions.

Part of this is my nature as a skeptic. It was my skepticism that led me to walking away from the church in my mid-teens and the same skepticism caused me to abandon atheism near the end of my undergraduate studies.

While I am a Christian today, I believe that Christianity is a faith worth thinking about. That means I ask questions and lots of questions. I do not care if it makes me look too liberal or too conservative. What matters is a lifelong quest for truth.

Who Am I?

Stephen Bedard

I am married to Amanda and we have five amazing kids. Three of them have autism and that shapes a lot of what I do. I am a Canadian who has lived in Ontario for most of my life.

I am a lifelong student and I have MDiv, MTh (New Testament) and MA (Biblical Studies) degrees from McMaster Divinity College and  a DMin from Acadia Divinity College. My degrees don’t mean I’m always right but they do reflect my love for learning. I am also a graduate of the Arrow Leadership Program.

My hobbies include reading on a wide range of topics, listening to classic rock music, collecting comics (DC pre-1977), and telling really awesome (depending on your perspective) dad jokes.

I enjoy writing, whether it is blog posts, magazine articles, journal articles or books. I write for the pure joy of it! What else do you need to know? I love history (ancient and military), all things Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

What Do I Do?

I have been an ordained pastor since 2001 and have served in numerous churches in Ontario and Nova Scotia. I am also an army chaplain in the Canadian Armed Forces. Everything I write on the this website are my own opinions and should not be seen as representing the Canadian Armed Forces or the Royal Canadian Chaplain Service.

I am also on the editorial board for the Canadian Journal of Autism Equity and the Trinity Journal of Natural & Philosophical Theology. Again, my opinions do not not necessarily reflect the views of these publications.

I am also an author of a number of books and articles. I enjoy writing both scholarly and popular level content on a wide range of topics from the Bible to disabilities.

What Kind of Content Do I Create?

I have been blogging since 2006. My first blog was called Down by the Bay and it was a personal blog where I recorded my experiences as a husband, father, and pastor. I have created a number of blogs since then.

I am also a podcaster, with my two primary podcasts being the Second World War and History of Christianity podcasts. You can find all my podcasts here.

Finally, I create videos. These are both long form videos and shorts, You can find my YouTube channel here.
