The days of just getting anyone with a heartbeat to be involved in children’s ministries are long gone. Not only is there a need for excellence, there is an even greater need for safety.
Providing a safe place for children is more than protecting a congregation from legal action. The safety of the child is an end to itself.
But how does a church go about creating a safe place for children?
I have come across an excellent resource called, The Child Safeguarding Policy for Churches and Ministries.
Having been in ministry for over twenty years and having been involved in developing a protection policy, I did not expect to learn much. I was wrong. Each chapter shared something that I had never thought of before. It was well worth my time going through it.
The book provides information on the nature of the different kinds of abuse. No one wants to hear these things, but the first step is about being aware. Sad but true stories are shared about how abuse takes place in the church.
The book also provides very practical advice on how to prevent the wrong people from getting involved and what to do if abuse takes place.
Each chapter concludes with a section to help churches develop that part of their policy. Every thing a church needs to create a protection policy is found in this book.
There is also a helpful set of appendices with templates for many documents, including applications for workers.
As a pastor and a parent of young children, I’m thankful for resources such as The Child Safeguarding Policy for Churches and Ministries.
