Dune: Part One – Review
My introduction to the world of Dune was the 1984 movie. I quite enjoyed it, even though I thought it was stranger than most sci fi movies. I eventually read the novel (and the sequels) and discovered that the movie strayed a fair bit from the book.
Now I have watched the new movie, which covers the first half of the book. The first comment is that it is beautiful. Frank Herbert created an incredible universe and our technology now allows us to put that on the big screen as it deserves. Even if you didn’t understand the story, most should appreciate at least how it looks.
I can see how some people might not like the movie. Not because it is a bad movie but because the source material is difficult. It is a great story but it really makes the audience work to understand it.
There were some slow parts to the movie but not even close to how slow the book could get. I thought movie gets the feel for the book but translate in a way more palpable for a movie audience.
I appreciated the casting. One of the big differences between the 1984 and 2021 movies is how diverse the cast is in the new one. I liked the diversity but even more, I liked that the casting captured the essence of each character. It was not diversity for diversity’s sake but quality casting that was not afraid to go beyond white actors.
This movie makes me eager to see the second one (even though it has not been filmed yet). I completely enjoyed it and was not disappointed at all.
