10 Steps to Becoming a Writer
I often get asked how one becomes a writer. Despite the title of this post, it is not a matter of plugging into an equation. You need to begin with some ability. There is a place to sharpen those skills but there has to be something to start with. Assuming that you have some basic writing ability, here are some steps that may be helpful in getting your writing career started. The steps are in no particular order.
1. Get some training. It is very helpful to learn some skills in a formal setting. There are many opportunities available. There are workshops, college courses, online and distance courses and so on. Take advantage of these opportunities.
2. Write for free. Find any opportunity to write. Look for newsletters and free magazines. There are plenty of people who are looking for free content. This will sharpen your skills and get your name out there.
3. Connect with other writers. Find both people at the same level as you and people who you can learn from.
4. Read good writing books. Read books both about writing and about grammar. There may be books focused on the type of writing that you are interested in.
5. Read the authors you want to be like. You likely have an area that you are interested in. Read the articles or books of writers who are doing what you want to do.
6. Start a blog. Like step two, this will develop your skills and get your name out there. The internet is a great way to promote your work. You may also get immediate feedback on your work.
7. Use social media. Social media will help you connect with other writers and promote your work.
8. Don’t be too picky as to where you submit. You are not likely to start off with the most prestigious publications. Start small and move up from there.
9. Have courage. Do you have a book in you? Do you have an article idea? Don’t second guess your ability. Give it a try. Every author has had doubts. Take a chance and see what happens.
10. Develop a thick skin. Even if you are an extremely gifted author, you will receive rejection notices. Sometimes it is because that article was really not that good. Other times it was not the right publication for that article. The point is, don’t give up.
Following these steps will not guarantee anything. But if you want to be a writer, they will at least get you on the right track. I would love to hear what works for you.
