Into the Night: Seasons 1 & 2 – Review
I rarely binge a television series but I will confess that I did that for the series Into the Night. It helped that each of two seasons are only six episodes long.
The basic premise is that something has happened to the sun and if you are anywhere when the sun is up, radiation will kill you. It doesn’t matter if you are inside or outside. Only people in certain bunkers, especially under a body of water can survive during the day.
The series starts with a hijacking of a plane by someone who has heard about what is happening and knows that the only way to survive is to be in a plane flying at night, travelling west to avoid the rising sun.
It is a terrifying situation. Unlike an apocalypse, such as in the Walking Dead, where it takes a long time for the population to be cut down, in Into the Night, the majority of the world is dead within the first twenty-four hours.
It says in the credits that it is based on the story The Old Axolotl: Hardware Dreams by Jacek Dukaj. What they mean by that is not that they are presenting the same story but rather that they are using the same disaster that he describes at the beginning of his story.
Why did I like it? One is that it is a fresh take on the apocalyptic theme. But I also liked the international setting and cast of characters.
It was also the pacing. There was never enough time to get bored. You catch a sense of the urgency as they race the sun to stay alive. It also always left you wondering what was going to happen next.
In an entertainment world where there is no lack of post-apocalyptic stories, Into the Night is one of the most interesting I have watched in a long time.
I’m looking forward to watching the spinoff series, Yakamoz S-245.
