4 Things That Should Happen in a Bible Study

Bible studies are very important for churches. Some churches have multiple small groups or they may have one Bible study that people from a small congregation attend. Based on the book of Acts, early churches were probably more like home Bible studies than what we think of as modern Sunday morning worship services.

So what should happen at a Bible study?

Here are four things that should be a part of a Bible study:

1. Studying the Bible. This is rather obvious. A Bible study should study the Bible. There is a place for small groups that look at modern Christian books but we also need to study the Bible. This includes looking at the original context and how the passage is relevant to our present context.
2. Learn how to study the Bible. While the focus may be studying a specific passage but we should also be demonstrating how we study the Bible. The principles can be taught that are applicable for other passages. The hope is that people involved in the study can take what they learn from the group and use it for personal study.
3. Pray with each other. Bible studies are not just about content. Prayer should be more than a convenient way to open and close the study. Prayer should include sharing needs and lifting each other up. It is not just an add on but an important part of the Bible study.
4. Creating fellowship. Some see the chatting and visiting as a distraction from the spiritual activity. But the relationships that develop are just as spiritual as prayer and study. The church is not about individual Christians but a family of Jesus followers. A Bible study should be strengthening and creating relationships.
