5 Things I Hope For the Future of the Church
The Christian church, along with the rest of the world, is going through a time of transition. There will be some change, one way or another.
These are some things that I hope for the future of the church. I don’t mean just the congregation I pastor but the church in general.
- Laypeople will take more responsibility for their own spiritual growth. I am a believer in strong preaching but that can’t be the only means of spiritual growth.
- Laypeople will become more involved in caring for each other. Visitation has always been an important part of the role of the pastor. But there is a need for people within the congregation to be proactive in caring for each other.
- Excellence will stop being an idol. We should attempt to be the best we can at all we do. But excellence can be an idol and can prevent some people from being actively involved in the life of the church.
- Churches will stop being afraid of change. I don’t believe in change for change’s sake. But there are times when change is needed and fond memories of the past are not a good enough reason not to change.
- The church will be more diverse. One of the things I enjoy about my congregation is that we are diverse, in terms of age, ethnicity, ability and other areas. We still have a ways to go and many other churches still struggle with this.
