5 Things Pastors Need to Communicate to Their Congregation
Pastors are communicators, whether or not they are the preaching/teaching pastor. No matter what pastoral role they might have within the church leadership, communication is key.
But what should pastors be communicating to their congregations? Here are five things.
- Biblical Truth. When people think of pastors, they often think of preachers. That is part of it but all pastors should be teaching the Bible in some way. The growth in biblical illiteracy makes this more important than ever.
- Character of Christ. You might think this falls under the first category but it deserves special attention. People can have impressive knowledge of the Bible and yet still lack a good understanding of the character of Christ. If we are to be followers of Christ, we need to know what he did and what he valued.
- Purpose of the Church. Each congregation is a part of the worldwide Church. We are all on the same team even if it sometimes feels like we are in competition. Pastors need to emphasize the role of the Church in spreading the kingdom of God.
- Mission of the Congregation. While the Church has a purpose, each congregation has a specific mission in the community in which they minister. This is often expressed in terms of a vision. It is not enough to have the vision or mission listed in the bulletin. It needs to be communicated regularly.
- Love of the Pastor. People will forgive a boring sermon or an obscure hymn choice if they know their pastor loves and cares for them. This is done not just by word but by action. Pastors need to show their congregation that they are loved just the way they are.
