Ancient Mysteries
I recently read Marvin Meyer’s Ancient Mysteries. Meyer is better known for his work on Gnosticism. This work deals with ancient mystery cults. This is an important work.
Very often authors will make radical claims about the influence of ancient mysteries on the composition of the Gospels. However, they rarely quote the actual texts but instead provide summary statements dressed in biblical language. This sometimes give the impression that there is more of a relationship than there really is.
Meyer’s book is a collection of the actual texts so that the reader has access to the primary sources in making judgments. While Meyer’s purpose is not to dispel Jesus myth theories, this book is very helpful for anyone interested in this subject.
