Black Summer: Season One – Review
As I have mentioned previously, I’m a sucker for zombie TV shows and movies. When I saw Black Summer on Netflix, I thought I would give it a try.
I didn’t know when I started that it was by the people who made Z Nation and may be in the same fictional world. I might not have watched as I found the episodes of Z Nation that I have watched to be pretty cheesy.
But do not let your like or dislike of Z Nation be the factor that determines if you watch Black Summer. The two shows are nothing alike, aside from the zombie apocalypse that is.
I found Black Summer to be quite engaging. In the tradition of the Walking Dead, even major characters are likely to die. It is difficult to tell who is going to make it.
Something unique about Black Summer is that the zombies are actually scary. I do not mean with their appearance, as this show doesn’t rely on special effects as much as some others. Rather these zombies are faster and smarter than your average zombie.
Add to that the fact that these people are not as likely to get a head shot as in other shows and you have a fearsome threat. A group of a dozen humans is in significant danger from one zombie. Again this is unlike many other shows where even a handful of zombies are not much of a threat.
While an actual zombie apocalypse is unlikely, Black Zombie felt like the most realistic depiction that I have seen so far. Normal people would be very scared and likely to be killed. And that is what happens here.
I appreciated the short season of only eight episodes as that meant that there was not much filler added. Still, I’m looking forward to the second season.
