Black Summer: Season Two – Review
The second season of Black Summer was similar in style to the first season and just as interesting. Whereas the first season was about how various people dealt with the first weeks of the zombie apocalypse, this one is more of how humanity settles into the “new normal.” Spoiler alert: They don’t do well.
Season two continues what was introduced in the first season of going back and seeing the same event repeatedly from different characters’ perspectives. This is an effective way to tell the story and to see how everything interconnects.
It is ironic that this is called “Black Summer” as it takes place in a white winter. We see how low humanity can sink. These are not exaggerated characters, such as the Governor and Negan from the Walking Dead, but normal people in an abnormal situation. That is what makes it so terrifying.
Black Summer is as realistic as zombie shows can get. The zombies are fast and they rarely are taken down with one shot. People starve and moral limits are broken.
The main characters are Rose and her daughter. We see significant development in Rose in this season. Last season she was the terrified wife and mom, this season she is the fierce mother who will kill anyone who looks at her daughter wrong.
I have enjoyed Black Summer’s fresh take on the zombie genre and I hope they do more seasons.
