Bruxy Cavey, Abuse, and Future of Ministry

I recently wrote a post that reflected on Bruxy Cavey’s return to ministry. It was a frustrating experience in that I received major pushback from both sides, some who thought I was too kind and some who thought I was too harsh on Bruxy.

I really do not intend to make a career out of writing about Bruxy Cavey. There are many other topics I would prefer to write on. But I feel compelled to clarify a few things.

I believe I have already responded to those who thought I was too kind to Bruxy in that earlier post.

But I do need to respond to those who thought I was too harsh and I need to do it very carefully.

Information was shared with me about what happened with Bruxy Cavey leading up to the end of his ministry at the Meeting House. It was basically his side of the story, with details that are not public. I will not share those details here.

Those who sent me this information have been frustrated that I have not removed my previous posts and videos that talk about Bruxy’s abuse.

It is important for me to promote the truth and ultimately I am not wedded to a particular narrative. What matters is what is true. Unfortunately in this case, I have been sent Bruxy’s side of the story and I have only heard the summaries of the person’s story. There is definitely an unequal level of detail in what has been shared with me.

That is okay, as I am not the judge in this case and I don’t need access to all the evidence.

One thing that I will clarify is that I have written about Bruxy with the impression that the sexual activity took place during a period in which Bruxy was counselling the person. That does not seem to be accurate.

I am not convinced that the counselling relationship is irrelevant to the accusations against Bruxy, but that is only my personal opinion.

The original post was about my concerns about Bruxy’s return to Bible teaching and having a level of leadership at this time. I realize those within the Small Church network say he is not involved in leadership but he is both writing the content and he IS Bruxy Cavey, one of the most accomplished church leaders in Canada.

But what if everything that was sent to me was completely true in every detail (I know this is not fair as most of you don’t know what was sent)? What if the other person was capable of consent and did consent to have a sexual relationship with Bruxy? And before other people jump all over me, I am NOT saying she was capable or gave consent.

Ultimately it is not my role to sift through the evidence and to make a final judgment. I have my opinions but that is all they are.

HOWEVER, the fact remains that Bruxy has outstanding charges of abuse. As you can read in this news article, Bruxy has been charged with abuse and other allegations have been shared with and are being investigated by the police.

Even if that was all that we had to go on, this would be enough to create concern for Bruxy to return to ministry.

If I was a pastor who had been charged with sexual abuse, and even if I was completely convinced that it was a consensual sexual relationship, I would wait until the charges had been dealt with before making any sort of public return to ministry.

That is just common sense.

I do not know what the final results will be of the initial charges or the further allegations in the context of the courts. But just the fact that this is still going on should bring a halt to any public form of ministry.

Bruxy Cavey is an intelligent person and I can’t believe that I have to defend my opinion that this is not a wise choice on his part.

I do not desire or intend to have a back and forth on this. For those who wish that I would cease all reference to abuse, I will not do that while he is still being charged with abuse. You can consider me a bad person for this, but this is where I am.
