PRT Site Kandahar, Afghanistan
Padre Mike Allen (R) holds a young 5-year-old boy as Sergeant Bill Burfitt, a medic with the Canadian Provincial Reconstruction Team, administers a small amount of medication after his examination. Sgt Burfitt and Padre Allen were taking part in a free medical clinic for the local population of Kandahar. The clinic was set up just outside of the PRT Compound in conjunction with their American Medical counterparts.
The Provincial Reconstruction Team’s Combat Service Support Company (CSS Coy) is composed of soldiers from 1 Service Battalion (1 Svc Bn) and 1 General Support Battalion (1 GS Bn), 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (3 PPCLI), and other units from 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group from Edmonton, Alberta. The Combat Service Support Company supports the Provincial Reconstruction Team by providing essential administrative, logistics and medical services. Daily tasks include vehicles repairs and maintenance, maintaining camp services and amenities, food and water distribution, vehicle convoys and convoy escort, movement of PRT personnel, financial and accounting support, emergency casualty evacuation and treatment.
Since August 05, the PRT has begun operations in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The PRT brings together representatives from the CF, Foreign Affairs Canada (FAC), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in an integrated Canadian effort. Under Operation ARCHER ROTO 0, the PRT will reinforce the authority of the Afghan government in and around Kandahar and help stabilize and rebuild the region. The PRT includes about 250 soldiers, drawn largely from Land Forces Western Area (LFWA).
