Devotions: 1 Peter
A devotion based on 1 Peter 2:12.
In his first letter, Peter writes to a church that is under pressure. They are experiencing persecution and it is making the Christian life difficult. It is always easier to give up but Peter encourages them to hold fast. Among other things, Peter tells them to be careful about how they act in front of the Gentiles, which in this context means non-Christians.
Why should Christians care about what non-Christian think? After all, only God can judge us. It is true that in the end, only God’s judgement matters. But that won’t stop others from trying. If we live holy lives, the critical judgement of others will not matter. However, if non-Christians judge us by our bad behaviour there is a problem. Peter’s hope is that the righteous response of Christians, even under persecution will eventually bring about something good.
