Devotions: Jonah
A devotion based on Jonah 4:2.
Jonah is known for being the prophet swallowed by a fish. However, the most significant part of the book occurs near the end. Jonah had been hoping for the destruction of the people of Nineveh only to be disappointed by God’s grace. Can you imagine being angry that God was too loving? This passage is a real problem for those who believe the Old Testament God is only a God of wrath.
Who do we want to see come to the Lord? Our friends and family, the people we care most for. But what about the people we really dislike? What about the people we are afraid of? In the New Testament, the former persecutor Paul became a Christian. Unfortunately for Paul, the Christians were still afraid of him. Can it be that God’s grace and love works differently than ours?
