Discernment – Review
I have been reading a number of books by Henri Nouwen lately. One of the best that I have read is his book Discernment.
One of the most common questions that people have is how to know God’s will. How do we know if God is calling us into ministry? How do we know if God wants us to change jobs?
Nouwen provides some helpful principles for discerning God’s will. Nouwen was a Roman Catholic but he writes for all Christians. As a Protestant, I was able to embrace the options that he gives.
What I liked was that his methods of discernment are biblically based but are also illustrated by his own experience. Nouwen struggled with his own understanding of his calling. He invites us to observe his journey.
Each chapter ends with some practices that the reader can use on their own path of discernment. If you are trying to discover God’s will for your life, this book is a great place to start.
