Fantastic Four: First Steps – Review
I have been generally disappointed with the most recent Marvel movies. They have been most focused on building in interconnect universe than telling good stories. Fantastic Four was supposed to change that.
And it does.
I think it helps that the new Fantastic Four is not really connected to the rest of the MCU (yet) as it takes place on another earth.
This is an earth that is both like and unlike the mainstream MCU. It is both retro and futuristic, a look that I really enjoyed. In fact its a beautifully filmed movie.
This world feels more comic book-like, in some ways similar to what we see in Superman. It does not take itself seriously and it takes from granted the kind of strange events found in the comics.
The Fantastic Four is different from other super-teams as it is a family. Interestingly, like Superman, it does not focus on the origin but jumps in with an established team.
The previous attempts at Fantastic Four movies focused on Doctor Doom. This one instead was about Galactus. This is a Galactus that was more comic-accurate than the previous version. I strongly believe that superhero movies is only as good as the villain and Galactus is well done.
There are plenty of plot holes and leaps of logic, but no more than what we would see in a Fantastic Four comic.
This was a fresh take on a tired superhero genre. I was very entertained. We saw at the end of Thunderbolts that the Fantastic Four will come to the mainstream Marvel universe. It will be interesting to see how they blend the two styles.
Fantastic Four: First Steps is hopefully the first step toward a renewed Marvel energy. So far, I am encouraged.
