Good News: Our Pets
Growing up, we had pets for most of the time. We had two different dogs, one I don’t remember at all and the other I have vague memories of. However, I do remember our cats and we had a lot of them (I think we have 14 at one time because two of our females gave birth a couple of days apart).
For about the first twenty years of my adult life, I didn’t really have pets. My parents didn’t replace the cats after they died and Amanda and I only had her cat for a few months after we got married.
Eventually, we returned to including animals in our family. It started with a service dog for our son and it ballooned from there.
Currently we have one dog and four cats (I don’t count my fish as pets).
Lily is a Great Pyrenees dog. She is both very energetic and very lazy, depending on when you catch her. I had my doubts about her during her puppy days but she has grown into an adorable dog. I enjoy my walks with her.
Whitney is our oldest pet, a long-haired black cat who once ran away for a month and was found in another a city. She is the matriarch of the family and often comes to the emotional support of the humans.
Pekoe is our 25 pound female ginger cat. Because of her size, she really can’t do much. It is a challenge for her to climb on the bed. She is very affectionate and I can actually make her purr by just looking at her.
Wisdom is our Siamese cat. He was originally supposed to be a female kitten named Sophia but we brought the wrong cat home and noticed he had extra parts. We named him Wisdom because Sophia is Greek for wisdom. However, he is far from wise. Still, he is very attached to me and follows me around the house.
Gandalf is a Main Coon mix and is an extremely beautiful cat. But his personality is very unpredictable. He is the latest addition to our family. He is one of the quirkiest cats that I have ever met. But we love him.
How is any of this Good News? Pets are not just mouthes to feed, they are part of our family and they bring us joy and laughter. They also are sensitive to our emotions and are known to be affectionate just when we need it. I can complain about them, but I am still thankful for them.
