Good News: Proud of Logan
Parents are naturally proud of their children, especially as they reach the typical milestones that we expect: driver’s licence, graduation, etc. I am no different.
Our oldest child, Logan, just finished high school. That is one of those normal accomplishments that we all love to celebrate. However, Logan’s graduation is a bit different.
Logan is twenty-one years old and is about the age when many people are finishing college or university. Speaking of college and university, this high school certificate will not qualify him for that.
Logan has been in special education, which is a program that allows students to stay until they are twenty-one. Our daughter Abby is in the same program at a different school.
So while many parents are celebrating graduation with an eye to the opportunities for future accomplishments, it looks a little different for us.
That is not to say that I am not proud of Logan because this was “only” special education. My reaction is the exact opposite.
We are super proud of Logan and here is the special gift that this graduation is for us: we are proud of who he is right now and not just for the potential opportunities that will come his way.
I am not saying that Logan will not accomplish great things, but we are able to focus on the moment.
We were able to watch a short video of reactions from some of Logan’s fellow students about what they liked about him. Logan’s high school experience was of great value, not because of academic pursuits, but because of relationships developed. He made some great friends in that class.
I don’t know what the future holds for Logan. I don’t know what the future holds for any of my children. But I do know that I am proud of all of them for who they are and at this moment, the attention goes to Logan for his special graduation.
