Good News: Rock and Roll
One of the highlights for me last week was taking two of the kids to a great rock concert. This was the third (major) concert I had taken Justus and the first for Emma.
We saw Queensrÿche and Judas Priest. You might think that is a strange thing for a Baptist pastor, but hear me out.
I grew up as a fan of heavy metal. Yes, I was a “metalhead” in high school. It was a huge part of my childhood. While my taste in music did get a bit more tame as I got older, I always had soft spot for bands like Judas Priest.
Then I became a parent of teenagers. Surprisingly, Justus and Emma started liking hard rock/Heavy metal, and most of those bands were from my generation. They actually got me listening to the old music.
When we moved to Nova Scotia, I decided to check out what concerts were local. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Queensrÿche and Judas Priest were playing in Halifax and close to Justus’s birthday.
It was a fun concert and they are both great bands. But I have to admit that my favourite part was watching Justus and Emma’s reactions. They had an amazing time. You expect ears to be ringing but Emma admitted that her face hurt from smiling so much.
To me, this was not just a rock concert. This was quality time with my kids and an opportunity to make memories. To be honest, I love the fact that my teenage kids were not just willing, but eager to go to a heavy metal concert with their dad. It made for a fantastic family experience.
