Heart vs. Head
One of the reasons people don’t want to be involved in apologetics is that they do not want to have a intellectual faith. If they had to choose between a head faith and a heart faith, they would go with the heart.
But the point is that you do not have to choose.
There is nothing in the Bible that says faith has to be one or the other. The expectation is that we worship God with our entire being, including our heart and head.
What about this verse?
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1 ESV)
We are supposed to have spiritual worship, that is a letting go in an emotional sort of way. The problem is that the Greek word translated as ‘spiritual’ has nothing to do with spirit and it is actually the word from which we get ‘logical.’ Worship can and should include reason.
I am not sure where this idea came from that we had to choose one or the other. We don’t treat human relationships like that. The heart is fine for the first few dates but soon you are desiring to know more and more about each other. If you heard the one you love being criticized and you defended them, you would not be accused of having an intellectual relationship. The head and the heart are meant to work together.
What will happen if you deepen your understanding of God? You will not fall out of love with God. Rather your love for God will gain another dimension. Apologetics is not the enemy of faith, used the right way it will strengthen your faith in God.
