Is N.T. Wright a Heretic Regarding His Views of Adam?
I recently saw on social media an uproar about N.T. Wright. There were those who once respected his biblical scholarship who found that they could no longer agree with him. What did he say now?
In an interview with Michael Bird on the Ask N.T. Wright Anything podcast, Wright described Adam and Eve as hominids, part of an existing race of “human-like” beings, who God offered a special relationship.

Is this heresy? It may be shocking to some Christians but in fact, there are many evangelical scholars who believe something similar. William Lane Craig is one.
Is Wright right? (see what I did there?) I have no idea. I do not believe that Adam and Eve were exactly like what is described in Genesis. But honestly, none of us can know.
I think that what he says is reasonable and a fair balance of what we know from the Bible and science.
I will say that Wright’s view is not heresy. Orthodox Christian faith is not determined by our view of the first Adam, only of the second Adam. It is how we view Jesus that defines our faith.
My goal is not to defend N.T. Wright. There are things he says that I don’t agree with. I am only trying to get people to think.
The bottom line is: Not everything you disagree with is heresy.
