Ministry Reflection Nine
The reality of ministry is NOT that there are certain emotional and spiritually healthy people who pastor the rest of the people who are a weak and in need. The reality of ministry is that pastors have as many needs as anyone else in the church. We have troubles with our marriages and kids and health and finances. A sure way to experience burnout is for a pastor to assume is beyond the need for pastoral help. This of course leads to the question: who pastors the pastor? It depends on the situation and it should not be limited to one model. Some denominations have pastoral care in place for their pastors. Others find informal care through colleagues in ministry. In some cases, deacons or other leaders may be able to provide some care for the pastor and family. I have no opinions on the one right way to do it. I just know that the pastor and family need care.
How very true! Sometimes because of one’s polity or ego or embarrassment that holds one back from being pastored ourselves.
