Overlord (Movie) – Review
I have a great love for movies on the Second World War and I had noticed that there was movie that came out some time ago called Overlord. Overlord is the name of the military operation more commonly called D-Day.
When I watch one of these movies, I normally blog about them on my Military History Blog. But this is not exactly military history.
One of the reasons that I did not run out to watch this movie was that I was aware that it was mixing it with science fiction, specifically zombies. You don’t have to be a military historian to realize that zombies were not a part of D-Day.
I assumed the movie would be extremely cheesy and so I avoided it. Until I didn’t. Overlord actually was not that bad of a movie. It far surpassed what I expected.
The basic premise is that right before the D-Day invasion, some paratroopers were dropped in France to blow up certain targets to help make the Normandy invasion a success. So far so good.
In this case, not many of the soldiers made it to their target. Again, not so far off at this point. But when they arrive at French town, they discover that the Nazis had been doing bizarre scientific experiments.
The Nazis actually did some pretty horrifying experiments on people, mostly Jews, things that would make many of the worst horror movies pale in comparison.
What moves this into science fiction is that the Nazis were creating a serum to bring back the dead. And these are not the slow and lumbering zombies of the Walking Dead but fast and aggressive zombies that are hard to kill.
I won’t say that this is the most brilliant piece of film making in history but it is a fun action film that is surprisingly well done. There are plenty of movies I have seen that I though I had wasted my time. Overlord was worth watching.
If you are doing research on D-Day, this movie is not the right choice. But if you are looking for some thrilling escapism with a good dose of gore, Overlord is the movie for you.
