Palestine and the Second World War
I blog on military history, particularly the Second World War, in support of my podcast on the Second World War. When it comes to WW2, we often think of Europe, Africa, or the Pacific. But the war affected and helped shape Palestine, including what would become Israel.
Israel became a country in 1948, just three years after the end of the Second World War. Part of this was the sharp increase of Jewish immigration that happened because of the Holocaust.
Palestine had been controlled by Britain since the fall of the Ottoman Empire and had intended a nation for the Jews and a nation for the Palestinians.
There are many resources about this process but I was drawn to this 1940s, pre-nationhood video about Palestine. It uses some terminology that we no longer use but it is an interesting look at Palestine during that era.
