Punisher: One Last Kill – Review
I have generally enjoyed the street-level Marvel series that began as the Netflix shows and were eventually brought into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Daredevil is the best of the bunch but I have appreciated the others, including the Punisher.
If you are not familiar with the Punisher, he is sort of like Batman but he kills (a lot of) people with guns. His family was killed and so he kills the bad guys. This gets him in trouble with some heroes.
We have had a number of appearances of this Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, both in Daredevil and in his own series. I do believe that Bernthal plays the best version of Frank Castle of all of the live action versions that we have had.
Having recently watched the latest Daredevil series, I was ready to watch Punisher: One Last Kill. I was underwhelmed.
It was not horrible but I just did not get the point. I appreciated the presentation of Castle’s struggle with PTSD and his desire to end the pain. But this has been dealt with fairly well in earlier stories. More on PTSD is welcome, but this story did not seem to move things much.
It may have been because of the nature of Punisher: One Last Kill. It is not a movie and it is not a season of a series. It is more of a one episode special. It did not feel like they had the time to tell the story they wanted to tell.
Having said that, it is always good to see Jon Bernthal portraying the Punisher. He does a good job and the audience can really feel Castle’s pain.
I watched it and it was okay. You do not have to watch it to understand future appearances of the Punisher. It will be interesting to see how they include him in the new Spider-Man movie.
