Star Trek Discovery: Season Four – Review
Discovery has been controversial among some Star Trek fans as it has not always felt like stereotypical Star Trek. Still, I have generally liked the series.
I still think the best decision they have made was to send Discovery into the future. The feel of their starship and its technology did not really fit for the time period before Captain Kirk. This future world opens up opportunities to go wild with new technology.
The fourth season felt the most like Star Trek of all of the seasons. To me, it had a bit of a feel from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Instead of having to fight an evil race, they had to communicate with an advanced species named Ten-C.
This struggle to figure out how to communicate the danger their technology was to Federation planets was really the kind of story that Kirk’s Enterprise often found itself in. I thought it was a tale well told.
In past seasons, there was always tension between the main character, Michael Burnham, and whoever was captain at the time. Burnham always knew best and had to come up with imaginative ways to disobey orders.
In this season, it is Burnham that is captain. Not only that, she is the one who now has to deal with those who “know best” and disobey orders. To make matters worse, it is her lover, Book, who is the one who goes rogue.
I thoroughly enjoyed the fourth season of Discovery. It had not weak moments earlier in the series (like all of the Star Trek series have) but it is really finding its way.
