Star Trek Strange New Worlds: Season One – Review
The first season of Strange New Worlds is not only some of the best Star Trek, but some of the best television I have seen in a long time.
It is difficult for me to explain how much I enjoyed this show. Star Trek has expanded in many directions from the original series. Strange New Worlds combines the best of the old and the new Star Trek.
It is obvious that the writers of this series love the Star Trek mythos. I love that the recurring bad guys are not the familiar Klingons or Romans but the obscure Gorn.
The characters stand out and immediately are developed into their own personalities. Many of them are familiar, at least to those who are familiar to the original series.
Of course we have Captain Pike, Number One, and Spock. But we also get Uhura, which I did not expect, plus Nurse Chapel. The medical officer is Dr. M’Benga, who appeared in a couple of episodes of the original series. There is even a Kirk, but perhaps not the one people expected. There are some characters introduced as well and they are all well developed.
One of the big changes for Strange New Worlds was to use the episodic formula rather than the season-long storyline. This works very well and is quite refreshing.
The episodes have a mix of dark and light-hearted stories. One includes the switching of Spock and his fiancé into each other’s bodies. It was cheesy but in a nostalgic way that was enjoyable.
My main complaint is they killed off one of my favourite characters. I won’t say who, for those who have not watched it, but I was sorry to that crew member go.
Strange New Worlds recaptures the magic of Star Trek and repackages it for a new generation. It may go down in history as one of the best things to come out of the Star Trek universe.
