The Truth in Jesus
I have really become interested in George MacDonald. One of the books by him that has been on my shelf for a while is The Truth in Jesus. It was time for me to read it.
Now to be clear, George MacDonald did not write a book titled The Truth in Jesus. This is a collections of essays/sermons by MacDonald that have been published together because of their common theme.
The book is edited by Michael Phillips. What Phillips did was to adapt MacDonald’s writing for a modern audience. This was not a change in contact or even vocabulary. MacDonald was not afraid of putting together a sentence with almost two hundred words. Phillips breaks up some of MacDonald’s monster sentences to make his writing more readable.
The other thing that Phillips does is to write a short reflection on the essay/sermon. As someone who has dove deep into MacDonald’s thought, his reflections are helpful.
Having read this book, I can see why MacDonald was such an influence on C.S. Lewis. I’m sure some of his interpretations and opinions would be controversial for some people. But he has a Jesus-focus that is difficult to argue with. This is definitely a good read.
