The Way of the Wesleys
One of the books that I came across in my research into John Wesley is John R. Tyson’s The Way of the Wesleys: A Short Introduction. Tyson does a fantastic job of gathering the teachings and writings of John and Charles Wesley and summarizing according to the theological themes. The topics touched on in this book include:
- The Bible
- Sin
- The New Birth
- Holiness
- Grace
- The Holy Spirit
- Jesus Christ
- Christian Perfection
- The Atonement
- The Trinity
- The Means of Grace
- The Lord’s Supper
- Life in the World
- An Ecumenical Spirit
With so many topics, Tyson is not able to go in-depth for any of them. That is why it is subtitled A Short Introduction. People wanting detail will be disappointed.
What I really appreciated about this book was the emphasis given to Charles Wesley. His ideas are presented, even when they came into conflict with that of John.
The book is well written and is a great introduction anyone starting to learn about John and Charles Wesley.
