Titans: Season Three – Review
I have really been enjoying the live action Titans series but I mostly heard negative reviews of the third season. I wanted to judge for myself.
I actually quite liked this season. Yes, it was very different from the first two seasons. They were focused more on the Titans comics, whereas this delved more into the Batman mythos.
Those familiar with the comics know that Jason Todd (Robin) gets killed by the Joker and then comes back to life as the Red Hood. This season follows that basic premise but with plenty of twists and turns.
The main villain of the season is Scarecrow, who is not known as a Titans villain. This series examined Jonathan Crane in a fresh way and there was much more depth to his character than other depictions.
A couple of new characters to the series (but not the comics) are Barbara Gordon and Tim Drake. Barbara Gordon was once Batgirl but after being paralyzed by the Joker finds new ways to fight crime, eventually becoming police commissioner. Tim is young man who is obsessed with Batman, Robin, and the Titans. I enjoyed both characters.
Really this season was all about second chances. The recurring theme is life from death. What would you do if you had a second chance? Some people make better choices than others.
One disappointment was with Bruce Wayne. I do like the actor they have playing him. But with all of the chaos going on in Gotham, I expected him to return as Batman to help with the battle. Seeing him drive up after everything is taken care of was a bit anticlimactic.
Overall, it was a good season. Titans keeps getting better. It blends the 1980s era of comics with modern grittiness. It often leaves the audience thinking about consequences. It is a great series.
