Truth of the Gospel
I just finished reading a nice short book by G.B. Caird called the Truth of the Gospel. This was Caird’s first book and it is basically a defense of the Christian faith along the same lines as C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity. Considering Truth of the Gospel was written in 1950, it is surprisingly relevant. As much as some things have changed, much has remained the same over the lsat sixty years. There was much that I enjoyed in the book. Caird has good chapters on the existence of God, problem of evil, nature of Jesus and understanding the Trinity. However, I disagreed with his view of Scripture. Although Caird seems to take the Bible, especially the New Testament, as historically reliable, he does reject the infallibility, inerrancy and any traditional understanding of inspiration. Despite this, Truth of the Gospel, is a useful defense of the Christian faith that has much to teach modern apologists.
