Umbrella Academy: Season Three – Review
In the previous season, the Umbrella Academy once again saved the world. They were able to return to their own time, looking forward to picking up their lives where they left off.
Except they cannot.
Something they did changed history and now no one knows them. Not even, their “father” Reginald Hargreeves. And instead of an Umbrella Academy, there is a different group of superheroes called the Sparrow Academy. This, of course, leads to an instant fight.
The change that was made was the Umbrella’s mothers had all been killed before giving birth to them. I won’t spoil who did it or why it happened.
Meanwhile, a new threat emerges that, you guessed it, is looking like it is going to destroy the world (again!). The Umbrella Academy discovers this and tries to stop the threat, but to do that, they must ally with the Sparrow Academy and they all hate each other (with two exceptions).
This season was good in a number of ways. One was that they took time to dig deep into all of the main cast. I enjoyed how they approached the changes for Elliott Page, especially as just before watching this season, I had bumped into Elliott. All of the characters were put through the wringer and we learned a lot about them.
On the other hand, the season also got a bit sluggish. In the middle, it felt like it just became them sitting around the hotel bickering. That’s part of their characterization but it got rather tiring.
This season, like the entire series, is really over the top. It pokes fun at the ridiculous concept of superheroes constantly saving the world.
One of the most interesting parts was the revelations about Reginald Hargreeves and who he really is. This was left as a cliffhanger, with the audience having more questions than answers.
If you liked the first two seasons, you will like the third. The Umbrella Academy is not for everyone but I found it enjoyable.
