It was the religious leaders of Jesus’ day that stirred the people up and they are responsible for Jesus’ death. Of cource Jesus could have done something to not die this aggonizing death as an accursed criminal but underwent it to fullfill prophecy regarding him.
Pilate tried to set Jesus free but the people, stirred into a frenzied state of mind by the religious leaders (Matthew 26:59: “…59 Meantime the chief priests and the entire San′he‧drin were looking for false witness against Jesus in order to put him to death,) demanded Jesus’ death. It is recorded plainly for people to use the power of reson to see at Matthew 27:21-26 here quoted from “The New World Translation Of The Holy Scriptures.” Please compare to any translation YOU may wish:
“21 Now in responding the governor said to them: “Which of the two do YOU want me to release to YOU?” They said: “Bar‧ab′bas.” 22 Pilate said to them: “What, then, shall I do with Jesus the so-called Christ?” They all said: “Let him be impaled!” 23 He said: “Why, what bad thing did he do?” Still they kept crying out all the more: “Let him be impaled!”
24 Seeing that it did no good but, rather, an uproar was arising, Pilate took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying: “I am innocent of the blood of this [man]. YOU yourselves must see to it.” 25 At that all the people said in answer: “His blood come upon us and upon our children.” 26 Then he released Bar‧ab′bas to them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed him over to be impaled.”
Neccessary? Yes for he bought back or paid the propitiatory sacrifice; paid a ransom..
(1 John 2:2): “Regarding the far-reaching benefits of Christ’s ransom, the apostle John wrote: “[Jesus Christ] is a propitiatory sacrifice for our sins, yet not for ours only but also for the whole world’s.”
(Matthew 20:28): “28 Just as the Son of man came, not to be ministered to, but to minister and to give his soul a ransom in exchange for many.”
