What is Your Sweet Spot as a Pastor?
Pastors in small churches are usually generalists. For example, in addition to my regular pastoral duties, I also put together the bulletin and the PowerPoint slides for Sunday.
Pastors in larger church can often specialize in certain areas. We find pastors of youth, seniors, children, music, and so on. We also see executive pastors teaching pastors.
Whether a pastor is in a small or large church, there usually is an aspect of ministry that is the “sweet spot,” that is the things that energizes and excites you about ministry.
It could be:
- Preaching
- Teaching
- Evangelism
- Administration
- Creating liturgy
- Leading music
- Vision casting
- Discipling leaders
There are many other things that can be added to the list. You may even have a couple of these things that feel like the sweet spot.
Unless you are in a very large church, where you may have the opportunity to focus on your favourite aspect of ministry, you likely have to do many different things in your role as a pastor. It is not likely that you will be able to do only the things that you personally enjoy.
However, it is important to understand what your sweet spot is and make sure that you are working in that area, as much as is appropriate for your context. Doing this will actually help you to be more effective in those things that are outside your area of interest.
It is also possible that you may have to find some opportunities beyond your official pastoral position to give time for your sweet spot. If you are a pastor who absolutely loves Christian apologetics, you may need to find other venues to give that area the desired amount of time (not that apologetics is inappropriate for a local congregation).
