Why I Do What I Do
I have been blogging since 2006 and have had a number of websites since then. I have been very active in creating content: blog posts, podcasts, and videos. Plus I have written a few books.
But why?
Why do I spend so much time doing all of this? What is the point of it? This is a good question and I have considered quitting all this and just leaving all of my old content for people to find if they are interested in.
But I have been going through an inner journey, probably a natural part of someone who is approach 60. I have been asking myself questions of why I do what I do.
If you look at what I write about, I talk about everything from theology to science fiction to the Second World War to disabilities. There does not seem to be much in common.
But perhaps there is a common voice.
As I was thinking about this, I came up with the phrase: “Thoughtful reflections of faith and life.” What I realized was that I have been reacting to extreme views and have been trying to find a nuanced voice, whether on the future of superhero movies or Christians listening to heavy metal music or how to look at a particular Bible passage.

That is my niche. That is what I have to offer. On the surface it looks like I write and speak on almost everything. But what I am trying to do is to come at life from a faith-informed perspective and to offer a thoughtful commentary. I am not trying to have the final word.
I have purposely divided up my blog into various sub-blogs, as I know that people interested in theology might not be interested in comic books or military history. I would be very happy if people picked one topic and read what I had to say about that.

You may have seen that phrase on my website and on my social media posts. In some ways this is a “soft reboot” of website. I have not removed old content, although I have made some changes to the look of the website.
The reboot is not so much in content but in intent. Thoughtful reflections on faith and life. I am presenting a snapshot of what a Christian life can look like. It includes church and the Bible but also an interest in that which happens outside of that.
The truth is that the religious-secular divide is artificial. The things I talk about that do not explicitly mention God are just as faith-informed as my theological posts.
