Writing English
There are many people who think they know English. But then you read their blog and you know differently. I have seen bad English in book and articles. As an editor, I sometimes find it painful to read what people write. Basic grammar is often a weakness. My biggest problem is as a college instructor. While many of the students are very good, I am sure others have not read over their paper even once.
One of the resources that I suggest is Writing English: The Canadian Handbook. I found it to be a very helpful guide. It starts with the absolute basics of nouns, verbs, adjectives and so on. Many readers may find this part boring and yet it is always good to have a refresher. You never know what bad habits you pick up along the way. It builds from there looking at phrases, sentences and paragraphs. One of the helpful aspects is that numerous examples are given with the sentences containing the mistake clearly marked. This book highlights many of the most common mistakes made in writing. It is so full of information on writing that it just can’t be passed up. You can read it front to back as I did or you can keep it as a reference work.
I would recommend this book to college and university students, bloggers, journalists and authors. If you want to get your content to your audience, it is essential that you get your grammar straight. Even if you are not Canadian, you should find this book helpful.
