A Birthday Lunch
On Saturday, we went to Kitchener to meet up with Logan and Abby for lunch. It was Abby’s 24th birthday.
You might wonder what a birthday lunch looks like with two minimally verbal autistic young adults. What happens when the people you are meeting do not speak back to you?
That would be a fair question.
The truth is it that was one of the best times I have had in some time. I spent much of the lunch smiling. While Logan and Abby generally do not talk, they do communicate.
For example, they were able to pick what they wanted for lunch by pointing at the menu. They were quicker to choose than most people.
More than that, they communicate with facial expressions and body language. Both Logan and Abby had smiles. It was obvious that they were enjoying themselves. It helped that Abby picked her favourite restaurant (Boston Pizza).
It was such a blessing for us to be together with Logan and Abby on this special day. Abby had a great day and so did we.
