A Quiet Place: Day One – Review
I have enjoyed the series of movies in the “A Quiet Place” franchise. It is a fresh take on both alien invasion and post-apocalyptic themes. The need to be absolutely quiet to avoid the alien monsters taps into some of our primal fears.
The previous movies took place after the alien invasion had already taken place. Day One is about how the aliens had first appeared, focusing specifically at their arrival in New York City.
They could have taken any number angles on this. It could have been about the police or military response. Even with an individual story, it could have been about a man who steps to take on the role of hero. None of this is what appears in A Quiet Place: Day One.
The central characters include Sammy, a young woman dying of cancer, living at a hospice and just enduring her last days with her cat, Frodo. Sammy knows she cannot survive but she chooses a goal and seeks to accomplish that mission before she dies.
She reluctantly allows Eric, a young law student from Britain, to accompany her on her mission. He seems very weak to begin with but develops his courage as time goes on. He is inspired by Sammy and he becomes an invaluable help.
I really enjoyed this instalment of A Quiet Place. It had plenty of science fiction action, answered some of our questions, and even more so, it gets us to invest in the lives of Eric, Sammy, and Frodo.
While this movie has much in common with other science fiction movies about alien invasions, it also has a freshness to it. The acting was excellent and I felt like I was in the situation, pushing through a chaotic city, trying to accomplish that one thing. I highly recommend it.
