Amish Vampires in Space
Yes, you read that correctly.
I first came across this book in a list of worst Christian book covers. I’m not sure why as it actually has quite a nice (if spooky) cover. It probably was because of the title. Amish Vampires in Space.
Before you reject this book based on the title, you need to know the backstory. The name was made up by someone other than the author as a jab at the current Christian trend of Amish fiction. Apparently Christians love all things Amish. The author, Kerry Nietz, came across the title and offered to write a novel based on it.
If you are looking for a story that makes fun of Amish fiction, you will be disappointed. It is not satire, it is not comedy. It is what the title describes, a story about Amish vampires in space. It is a straightforward (although original) science fiction novel.
The story takes place in the future where humankind has terra-formed and colonized numerous planets. One of those planets was colonized by an Amish community. Unfortunately their sun becomes unstable and the Amish have to be evacuated aboard a ship that also is carrying a failed genetic experiment. Without giving away too much, some of the crew and their Amish passengers become vampires.
I really enjoyed the story. As a science fiction fan, I had never come across anything quite like this. I appreciated the tension between the Amish culture and the crew of the ship. There were also the struggles of how to remain truly Amish while facing vampires, many of which were their kin.
This is a Christian novel but it is not preachy in any way. Christianity comes out in the Amish culture and one of the crew comes from a Christian background. The interplay between the non-Amish Christian and the Amish is interesting.
If you are looking for a fun science fiction novel that is also Christian and includes vampires and the Amish, this is the book for you. Seriously, I really enjoyed it and I think you will as well. You can get Amish Vampires in Space in paperback and Kindle.
