An Unexpected Party
Two weeks ago when Amanda had her stroke, I did not know what life would look like for us. To be honest, I still don’t know.
It could have been very easily been much worse than it has been. Amanda could have lost the ability to speak or become totally or half paralyzed.
And yet just a couple of days ago, actually two weeks to the day of the stroke, Amanda and I were able to attend a Robbie Burns Dinner put on by the Nova Scotia Highlanders, one of the regiments that I am a chaplain with.
We had been planning on going to this for a while but I assumed with the stroke that was not going to happen. And yet on Saturday, Amanda came with me to the dinner.
Robbie Burns Dinners are always fun and this was was especially well done. There was much to enjoy but the highlight for me was that I could have Amanda there with me.
When she told people that she had a stroke two weeks previous, peoples’ eyes almost popped out of their heads. Even I had to pinch myself, as it seems so unreal.
I do not want to give the impression that Amanda is all better. She still walks with a walker, has weakness on one side, and gets exhausted easily. This particular dinner definitely had a cost to her physically.
And yet Amanda made a decision and went for it. I am thankful that she was able to come with me to this dinner, even though I know she has a long journey ahead of her.
