Annihilation – Review
I am always on the lookout for good science fiction movies, especially ones with a fresh take on the genre. The beauty of streaming services is that we have access to some great movies that we might have missed when they first came out.
One of these for me is Annihilation.
The basic plot is quite familiar. There is a phenomenon that suggests an alien presence on earth. Scientists are trying to figure out what is going. A special team is sent in to find the answers before it is too late. It’s been done a million times.
And yet Annihilation does feel fresh in its approach. It is not just because the team that is sent in is all female, although that helps. It is also the nature of the alien presence. It is the way the alien presence tries to interact with life on earth, human and otherwise.
I found this movie to be very thoughtful. One of the themes it explores is that of self-destruction. Why do people make choices that seem to deliberately turn their life upside down? And is there any redemption within this?
There are also a couple of plot twists that keep the audience going. And the ending is one that makes you ask: “What exactly just happened here?”
I very much enjoyed Annihilation and my teenage daughter loved it just as much. Definitely one that people should track down.
