Autism and Ultrasound Detection
A new study has suggested that routine ultrasounds may be able to detect autism in utero as there is often rapid growth of brains and body. I know that when Logan was diagnosed, they pointed out his large head as something that often goes along with autism (they also pointed out my own large head!).
This is fine if it is going to be used for early treatment. But I continue to worry about the potential of ending autism by abortion. Although it is not mentioned in the article, if doctors were able to communicate the probability of autism, many parents would choose abortion. We need to be aware of these ethical issues as we cheer the advances of science.
