Band of Brothers – Revisited
I have watched Band of Brothers a number of times but I just recently rewatched the series after a number of years. You never know how a series will hold up.
Considering that series came out back in 2001, Band of Brothers stands up very well compared to other movies and series about the Second World War. This series could have just been released based on the quality.
Why is Band of Brothers so good? A big part of it is that it is based on real people and it is not just a Hollywood re-imagination of what the war should have been like. And the original story is a story that is worth telling and worth watching.
Another positive aspect of this series is that the goal is not to glorify war but to depict war in all of its messiness. War is about people who rise to the best and sink to the worst. War is about people celebrating the bonds of friendship and grieving the loss of those same friends. It is gritty, not in a cinematic style, but with a realistic grittiness.
Band of Brothers is long enough for us to get to know many of the characters, seeing them from basic training to the occupation of Germany (if they live that long). We care about those characters and we see how they change from the things they experience.
The acting in Band of Brothers is top notch as well. In fact it is worth googling how many famous actors appear in the series. Some of the actors have one of their first major appearances in this series.
