Biblical Archaeology Review
One of the resources that I have grown to appreciate is the magazine Biblical Archaeology Review (BAR). Ironically, I first encountered BAR from a person who was very critical of Christianity as I debated on an atheist discussion board (it was Holysmoke on fidonet). While BAR is not a Christian magazine (every issue has at least one letter from some conservative Christian wanting their subscription cancelled because they thought it was a Christian magazine trying to prove the Bible true), it is very respectful of Christianity and the Bible. BAR is not meant to be used for apologetics and yet it has much information useful for apologetics, such as debates between those who take Israelite history seriously and those who do not. It certainly gives the reader a good picture of the current state of scholarship when it comes to biblical archaeology. Just be aware that this magazine is meant for Jews, conservative Christians, liberal Christians and non-religious alike. I might not always agree with everything written in BAR but I do appreciate the role it plays in helping me to better understand the biblical world.
