DC League of Super Pets

Everyone needs a friend. They say a dog is man’s best friend. But is it Superman’s best friend? What happens when Lois Lane comes into the picture? What happens to Superman’s dog Krypto?

The new animated movie, DC League of Super Pets begins with Krypto, his origins on Krypton and his later relationship with the adult Kal-El. With Superman needing some more room for his relationship with Lois, he tries to find friends for Krypto.

Superman has the Justice League, could Krypto have something similar. Things look possible when a motley group of pets at an animal shelter receive superpowers from exposure to orange kryptonite.

This movie is obviously much different than the darker movies that DC has become known for. However, it is the right movie for the right people at the right time. Children will love it and parents will get many of the jokes that the kids won’t.

There are plenty of little nods to various other movies and shows. For example, the escape from Krypton owes much to the 1970s Superman movie. And there are a couple of fun digs at Marvel.

If there is something that some fans won’t like, it is the portrayal of Batman (voiced by Keanu Reeves). He is portrayed as the joke of the League, with even Aquaman being taken more serious. But perhaps it is the overturning of expectations that makes it funny.

Not everyone will like DC League of Super Pets but I suspect most children will. It is light hearted entertainment that has a positive message about friendship. There are definitely much worse movies out there.
